Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle After Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of space.

The diverse crew also comprised leaders in various fields.

The company behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
