Multiple Affected as Rough Air Hits A Delta Airlines Aircraft Arriving in Sydney, Australia

Multiple passengers and crew were hurt following a Delta aircraft from LA to Sydney encountered significant turbulence on Friday morning.

Flight DL41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it made its approach and landed at Sydney Airport, a company official stated. Several cabin crew members sustained injuries.

Emergency medical services stated they evaluated a total of five people, and transferred a trio to a medical facility with minor injuries that included back pain and migraines. The patients' ages spanned from their thirties and seventies.

This marks the most recent case of commercial jets experiencing turbulence, with aviation specialists pointing out that shifting climate patterns is a major factor.

On board were 245 passengers and 15 crew members on the wide-body jet, the representative added, stating that the plane touched down "without further incident" at the airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday.

Emergency responders indicated they received a call just three minutes before the plane arrived, and emergency vehicles were standing by on the runway.

The reasons turbulence is getting more common - and more severe.

In the previous year, 25 people sustained injuries when another Delta jet, on a route from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, hit "significant" atmospheric disturbance just 120 minutes into the transoceanic journey, and diverted for an unscheduled landing.

Earlier this year, those on board on a Singapore Airlines flight endured a frightening short but intense of severe turbulence. One passenger died and numerous people sustained injuries, as those without seatbelts lifted out of their seats and crashed back down.

Turbulence is not uncommon during flights, and while cases of rough conditions appear to be increasing, they are remained quite uncommon.

Data suggests that there are an estimated 5,000 incidents of severe or worse turbulence annually, out of a sum of more than 35 million flights that currently occur worldwide.

Severe turbulence is defined as when the vertical motions of a plane passing through rough air masses apply in excess of a significant G-force on your body - a strong enough force to throw you from your seat if you did not have on a safety belt.

As climate change modifies atmospheric conditions, specialists caution that air travel could become bumpier: shifts in temperature and changing jet streams in the upper atmosphere are expected to boost the frequency and intensity of significant turbulence.
